Rings of mushrooms are steeped in folklore, and are known as witch rings or faerie rings. If you step inside one you risk being abducted by the faeries, who will keep you in their lands for as long as they please. Time moves differently in Faerie, and when you return to the human world the years might come back at you all at once, making you old and withered, with all your loved ones long dead.
